Harry King leads the way as Ginetta Junior season launches

Rising star Harry King made the perfect start to his 2017 Simpson Race Products Ginetta Junior Championship campaign after topping the times during official testing at Brands Hatch.

The talented teenager from Holyport made the trip to the Kent circuit looking to maintain the impressive performances he has shown throughout a busy pre-season testing programme in recent weeks.

The official test, which was held as part of Ginetta’s 2017 season launch, provided teams with three 35 minute sessions across the day and gave an opportunity for Harry to size up the competition he will do battle against during his second year in the highly competitive one-make series.

An issue with the transponder on his car meant Harry failed to set an official time during the first session, although the team’s own in-car timing showed him to be the third quickest driver on track.

With the transponder registering lap times in session two, Harry again found himself third quickest at the wheel of his Elite Motorsport-run car, with his focus then on going even quicker in the final session of the day.

Improving his time by nearly half a second, Harry would vault to the top of the times to firmly cement his position as one of the drivers to beat in 2017.

In fact, his best time of 56.185secs would have been good enough for pole position in any of the last four seasons at Brands Hatch, and was quicker than some drivers who were on track testing the more powerful GT5 variant of his Ginetta G40.

“It’s fair to say that the media day has been a very promising start to our championship campaign, and it’s nice to come away from the official test with the quickest time,” he said. “It’s great to see the improvements that I have made from this time last year, and I have to say thank you to everyone in the Elite Motorsport team, and to my driver coach Chris Hodgetts, for their work during the off-season as we’ve been able to gain a lot of valuable data across a variety of circuits during testing.

“Whilst it is very reassuring to have ended official testing with the quickest time, it’s what happens when we return to Brands Hatch next month that really counts, and I can’t wait for the racing season to get underway.”

Harry’s Ginetta Junior campaign will kick off back at Brands Hatch on the weekend of April 1/2.
